old as death

August 8, 2011

borders are arbitrary divisions forged from violence.

people still dying to cross,

people still killing those who dare.

the great wall of china, israel,

berlin, the pearly gates,

good fences, good neighbors make.

perceived threat costs millions:

economy, defense, spending,

strategic, budget, planning,

analysis, intelligence?, wartime,

that is yours, this is mine.

born in fear, maintained by breath,

silly lines in the sand as old as death.

    the borderlands’
    abyss
    nothing and everything
    amiss
    all my projections
    hex-again protections
    burning
    the fingertips
    of the cosmic erection

not sure what i meant, but i’m really glad it culminated with the phrase “cosmic erections.”

PS i love that you included the pearly gates in your poem on borders and the arbitrary violence they can inspire.
