Do Good December

December 1, 2010

Here’s my promise to myself: I am going to do 1 good deed each day for the whole month of December. And I will write about it. I got the idea from a friend who is participating in Pay It Forward Day today. I want to take this idea and extend it to do something good every single day this month for a few personal reasons, though. First, I want because I am trying to create good feelings and happiness in my brain. Lately, my brain has been trying to get all depressed and shit, and I’m telling it NO. No depression for you, Brain, even if people can be thoughtless and politicians are jerks and boys are clueless. No.

Also, because I hate the consumerist part of the Holiday season. Like, I hate it bad. Seeing all the commercials for new, stupid junk for kids to use 1 day then throw away makes me want to punch a hole through my TV. Seeing all the advertisements for new kitchen gadgets for white women to use makes me want to submerge my left hand into a pot of boiling homemade tomato soup. And seeing all those pretty heterosexuals buying diamonds as if a shiny necklace or ring makes a happy relationship makes me want to hold my breath until I die.

But I don’t want to be a Grinch. I want to be a generous, kind, angelic snow queen. I want to be a lover, not a fighter. A giver, not a taker.

Here’s Day 1:

What: I took stuff to make really good hot cocoa, complete with a choice of handmade marshmallows or whip cream, to my friend who just had a baby.

Why: I love her. And her new baby.

i fucking hate diamonds and everything it takes to get them out of the earth and all of the money spent on advertising them. fuck diamonds. especially those new “chocolate” diamonds. what advertising genius came up with that? “what are we gonna do with this shit-brown diamond? … wait! women love chocolate! women love diamonds! CHOCOLATE DIAMONDS!” i know not everyone feels the same way i do but the only thing i want less than an ornamental expression of both material wealth (lookit me, i have so much money, i just WEAR it around!) and of the marriage market (which equates women with material goods), is one that looks like SEWAGE WATER.

okay, sorry, i’m done now. and i also will work hard to do good deeds each day in december. 🙂

  4. Lovely idea. I’m with you on the materialism/commercialism.

You could do something good for yourself: turn the TV off an entire day. I got rid of mine entirely and I’ve never been happier.

You have no idea how much the hot chocolate did me good 🙂 You are a beautiful friend. Piper and I are so lucky to have you in our lives.
